Hideaway (2021)

Hideaway explores the world of British birdwatching from an insider’s point of view. Most people would associate birdwatching with old white men looking through binoculars getting all excited about some rare bird that no normal person has ever heard of…. and they wouldn’t be wrong.

However, being a birdwatcher myself I don’t quite see it that way, there is much more to it than that. For starters, it’s definitely not reserved for the old, I have been birdwatching for the past five years, starting in my mid-twenties, and I have loved every minute of it.  There is something so calming about sitting out in the middle of nowhere in a wooden hide watching the world go by. Just sitting there looking out of the windows, sipping a cup of tea, and chomping on a chocolate digestive gives me such a warm feeling and gives me time to reflect.

There are many of these wildlife hides dotted around Gloucestershire, and so many people just walk past either not noticing or just paying no interest, but they are definitely missing out, so I created this series to give a glimpse into the world of birdwatching from my point of view in hopes that some people see what I see and maybe pop into a hide in the future to take a moment and enjoy the natural world for a moment.
